How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is that they are very affordable and easy to find particularly in the case of a Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues in your vehicle.
