Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Of the wide receivers who have seen at least 40 targets each of the two seasons, the top five slot scorers on perimeter routes were all speed receivers: Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Tyler Lockett and Michael Gallup. The bottom of the list was populated with more possession-based receivers including Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnson. These two are likely to see a boost in their targets this season if the Bucs move them into the slot more frequently however they'll need to improve their scoring on the perimeter to keep that high level.

The slot is a great option for wideouts who are quick, as they can open up more quickly when their route will not be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list that benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They're more effective on intermediate and short routes, rather than in deep areas. Jeudy is a great option to be a sleeper for this season since he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to play on more downfield targets. Hamler is expected to be a natural on short-to-mid-long and intermediate routes, as that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The amount of snaps receivers take in the slot could be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. However, it's not always an accurate representation of a receiver's skills because certain receivers excel in the slot, but cannot play deep, and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance, leads the league in goals per game (4.8) However, he's only ranked 6th in the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets come from the outside and it is difficult to gain a first down on a wide-open, deep route in that setting.

Certain receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. For instance the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he ran an astounding 74% of his slot routes compared to just 26% for boundary routes. This is a significant difference and indicates how much more efficient he is when aligned in the slot.

Furthermore, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines up inside on most of his passing downs, and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when lining up inside, since they are able to get targeted down the field and often have one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the flip side, we've got some great slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the pass game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the best tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by putting his slot to play nickel and dime packs and then moving him to the outside for base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are just as good. Wide receivers with high slot grades score touchdowns in the same way as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers than to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in 2 of them. In fact the slot receiver is running a higher number of slot routes than most players listed on this chart. This is an excellent way to generate matchup benefits for your team and helps to explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes big plays on the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this list, but he's still a very high-graded receiver and is a great match for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a different player who puts up big numbers with both types of targets is another example. He is one of the top players in the league at catching throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic player who can play contested catch.

Another player on this list that's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, which makes him a valuable part of his team's defense. He's struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is due to him playing with safety and linebackers who can't compete with Hilton's speed, size and ability to run routes.
