Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Speedy wideouts are among the biggest beneficiaries of moving into the slot bonuses, since they are more likely to be open downfield when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout, but could benefit from more slot work. He's a solid target for intermediate and short routes.

The last spot on the list features more possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than in deep areas like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a solid choice for a sleeper this year as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to play on more downfield targets. Hamler is likely to perform well in short-to-mid routes, since that's what he did well in 2021 while playing for the Bills. He could be a great replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The proportion of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to run deep routes. It's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's abilities, as certain receivers are better in the slot but don't play further.

Alshon Jeffrey, for example, leads the league in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8), but is only 6th in the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets are from outside, and it's a challenge to make a first down on an open, deep route.

Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his route in the slot tournaments, as opposed to just 26% on boundaries routes. This is a significant distinction and demonstrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, lines up in the middle of the field most of his passing downs and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more effective when lined up inside, as they are able to get targeted down the field and frequently find themselves with one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the flip side there are some excellent slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie leads the NFL in forced fumbles with seven, while Moore has the best tackle-stopping efficiency (-3.5) on this list. By deploying McDuffie in the slot when they're running nickel or dime-type packages, and then placing him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been an enormous benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are equally excellent. Wide receivers with an excellent slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers, compared to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's also interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 as he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of the sets. In actuality the slot receiver is running a higher number of routes in the slot than the majority of players on this chart. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes big plays from the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as fast as the other players in this ranking however he's still an elite wide receiver that fits well into the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, another player who is able to put up big numbers with targets of all kinds is a different example. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is one of the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also an excellent contested-catch threat.

Another player on this list who's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a key player in the defensive team. On the other hand, he's struggled to block passes from the outside and has given an unfavorable EPA against these kinds of targets. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety who aren't able to match Hilton's speed, size or ability to run routes.
