Samsung Fridge Freezers With SmartThings

The ice dispenser that comes with Samsung refrigerators is among the best we've ever tested. Its patent-pending Twist Ice Maker dispenses large cubes by simply twisting, and it can be stored in the drawer below when not being used. This makes more space on the shelf and makes it easier to locate your favorite drinks and snacks.

With Reversible Doors You can choose the direction in which your fridge or freezer opens. This lets you easily accommodate your fridge within the layout of your kitchen and keep your fridge neat and tidy.

Samsung's Family Hub serves as the central control for your SmartThings connected home through large touchscreens on your refrigerator. It can show live video from your smart doorbell, place orders for groceries based on an automated inventory or suggest recipes based on what you have in stock.

The Samsung FlexZone side by side fridge freezer is unique in its 3-zone system, which allows you to add an extra freezer drawer or refrigerator compartment. This flexibility lets you design your fridge freezer to meet your storage needs and requirements. The FlexZone module allows you to upgrade your fridge to a larger or smaller size by incorporating an extra FlexZone.

The refrigerator has a stylish design that will complement any kitchen decor. The stainless steel finish is elegant and robust. Plus, it has an anti-fingerprint coating that helps keep the exterior of the appliance looking brand new. The fridge comes with an external water and ice dispenser to make it even more practical.

It performed well in our tests as well however, the absence of a voice control or SmartThings integration on the 21.5-inch touchscreen was a missed opportunity.

There's plenty of space to store food in the rest of the fridge which includes two drawers for crisps and a FlexZone that can be customized as a middle drawer. This drawer lets you pick between five different settings, based on your requirements for the fridge-freezer compartment. There is the freeze setting that is compatible with the freezer settings as well as the soft freeze setting for wine or deli tray, a meat or fish setting and an alcohol setting for drinks, snacks and other items that are frequently used.

This Samsung FlexZone side by side refrigerator is ideal for families that want to have a refrigerator and a freezer in one unit. It's a little less spacious than high-end French door models, but it has plenty of useful features and is a great alternative for those with small kitchens.

Samsung Fridge Freezers are also extremely energy efficient thanks to their digital inverter technology. SmartThings

SmartThings might not be as effective as Alexa or Google Assistant, but you can still add more smart devices to it. It's also baked into Samsung smartphones TVs, tablets and tablets - and some refrigerators. That may be enough to justify it for some, especially when you own multiple Samsung products.

The SmartThings App is well-rounded and polished, with an "if x is greater than y, then y" automation feature that is very effective. You can set up things such as an alarm going off when sensors for water leaks detect a flood, or turning on lighting when your phone detects that you're at home. It could even control your refrigerator by connecting it to a smart plug, though we've had mixed results with that.

Samsung offers a variety of different options which include the SmartThings Station that you can connect to an existing router and use it as an nightlight. There's also a more affordable SmartThings Hub Dongle that supports Z-Wave and Zigbee and Thread with support coming soon.

Once you've connected your smart refrigerator to your smartphone and hub, it's extremely simple to use. SmartThings lets you control your refrigerator from any location. Notifications are sent to your phone when the fridge is opened or closed. You can set up schedules to set the temperature, and even create reminders.

SmartThings was an early participant in the Home Connectivity Alliance. This alliance is working to make major home appliances made by different manufacturers compatible. It could mean that you can control your Samsung washer and dryer, Electrolux oven and LG television from the same app in the near future.

While it's not as widely supported as Alexa or Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some big names on its list that include Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. It's compatible with the Matter protocol that allows accessories to be linked regardless of the brand. For most people however, combining Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls is most likely the best option.

Family Hub

A fridge freezer can't get much more modern than this: it's equipped with a 21-inch touchscreen in the door, complete with a myriad of clever features. Bixby, Samsung's voice-activated assistant, lets you to access entertainment apps, make notes for your family (think of it as a large digital version of the notepad that is attached to the refrigerator) as well as check weather reports and a lot more.

The touchscreen can also be used to manage your food and recipes, allowing you to add ingredients directly from a recipe app and see what's in your fridge using internal cameras. You can make a grocery list on the go and track food items to check their expiration date. You can also use an app for recipe reading to read out the instructions while you cook.

This is the second generation of Family Hub fridges and Samsung says it's spent a year fine-tuning them based on customer feedback. You can now create different profiles for every member of your family so that they can personalize the information and apps they have access to. It's not as great as the Alexa integration in your fridge, but it's an improvement over last year's model.

Family Hub is not only an application for managing entertainment and food but also controls Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can onboard Matter-compatible devices, like lights and plugs and can be used with the touchscreen to control them.

Samsung's fridge has been in use for a while and, although it offers a fair bit of functionality, the touchscreen smarts aren't exactly a must-have feature for most people. They're more of a fun and somewhat frivolous feature than anything else.

This may be changed with the release of more software updates, but for the moment these models are ideal for those who want to have the most complete connected refrigerator possible. If you're not among them, you can opt for a less expensive model without the Family Hub to save some money. If you own a variety of smart home devices that you need to manage from a single screen, or you love the idea of having a refrigerator equipped with a large touchscreen, it could be worth the money.
