How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window can be a source of frustration. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows, and enjoy benefits such as improved comfort, increased the value of resales and lower utility costs.

It's a task you can tackle yourself at a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. You only need the appropriate tools and a few minutes of your time.

Apply a thin bead of glazing compound on the edges of the new glass and in the rabbet grooves to seal and protect them. Allow it to dry completely and cure.

After the glazing compound dries and the glazing compound is dry, you can install the new window sash. First, coat the wood with a thick layer of linseed. This will keep the new putty from soaking up the moisture and deteriorating and cracking over time. Before you install a new pane, first take out the old one and clean up the area using a rag and an abrasive scraper that is a pull type or an abrasive wood chisel. Wear gloves and safety glasses when you work. You'll need a heating gun if the window is glued into the frame.

If you are planning to replace the original sash, take off the molding that holds the old pane. Sand the sash until it's flat and ready for new caulk. After the sash has been re-installed and sanded, apply a fresh silicone caulk to the glass to ensure it doesn't swell or fade in time.

Take the glazing points out of the rabbets, the grooves in the sash, where the glass is. If they're hard to cut, place the hand tool, like a heat gun over them to allow them to soften before. When using a heating tool, be sure to avoid damaging the sash and its railings.

Once the old points of glazing and putty have been removed, make a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, shaping it into a 1/2-inch thick. Press it into the rabbets where the glass will be placed. It is crucial that the glass is positioned against the putty on both sides If you have to do so, gently tap the glass into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack you can fill it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk prior to pressing it into the sash. Otherwise, you'll need to apply putty over the crack to form an impervious seal to keep water out. When the putty dries and the film is oily, wipe it off the glass using a rag and allow it to dry completely prior to painting. Paint after the putty has completely dried. It won't make a strong seal and may be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

If you've suffered a break in a window pane, you may be concerned about the expense of replacing it. But the truth is that replacing a single glass pane doesn't have to break the bank If you can do it yourself. In fact even windows with double panes can be replaced for a fraction of the cost of a professional.

If you're working with large glass windows first ensure it is securely attached to the frame. This job is relatively easy and quick with the right tools and techniques.

When you are ready to begin with the removal of the window pane. Pry out the metal glazing points that are attached to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles that act as "nails" that keep the window in place in the wood frame. They are submerged beneath a glaze putty or bead which hardens into solid wedge that holds the wood frame in place and hides the points.
