Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves

Summary: These basic stoves are lightweight and can burn wood, hexamine, white fuel, and gas canisters using a single nozzle. They are popular in cold weather, however they can be noisy and do not have simmer control.

Some inset multi fuel stove-fuel stoves are hybrids, able to burn multiple types of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal can be used with white and isobutane fuel containers.

Optimus Nova

The Optimus Nova is a multi-fuel stove that can be used with a variety of liquid fuels. It features a quick priming burner, self-purging aluminium pump, and a precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and wide spreading legs make it a stable stove that can be used on hard ground. This makes it an ideal stove for backpacking groups, base camps, kayaking and Arctic camping.

The Optimus Nova is different from other stoves with liquid fuel which have issues with unburned fuel lingering in the fuel line or the nozzle. This can be solved by flipping over the bottle. This removes intake hoses from the fuel, and forces them to absorb air which puts out flames and depressurizes bottles.

This seems like a fairly clever solution to a long-standing problem and it certainly is effective. The Nova can be used with any standard fuel bottle that has an o-ring seal, which includes MSR bottles. It comes with an oven bag that has pockets for spares, tools as well as lubricant and the fuel pump.

This is a great all-round stove for backpacking use in the UK especially for long-distance trips where a variety of fuels is required. Its cost is affordable when compared with canister stoves of similar capability. The Optimus Nova is also easy to maintain and fun to use.

Kovea Hydra

Since 2010, the Kovea Multi Fuel Stove has been a favorite among backpackers. The Hydra isn't as popular among UK backpackers, perhaps because they have gained popularity with brands that are more well-known or the latest lightweight offering from China or Korea. But this doesn't mean it's any less effective.

It is a small and light stove that can burn all liquid fuels like white gas, propane butane, and white gas through a single nozzle. It has a fairly typical stove design, with a burner bell bolted to a body that anchors three support legs that fold out. The pump is just above the fuel line, and the generator loop runs around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated above. The burner is a slow-moving flame type. This means it is less affected by the wind.

It's a remarkably versatile cooker as it can be used with propane canisters or isobutane canisters. It is easy to simmer on propane or isobutane and burns all types of fuel with a decent amount of heat, but is a little slower than other stoves when using white gas.

The instructions for the Hydra are written in English, but they were not written by native English speakers. The instructions caution against the use of certain kinds of lighter fluids that if used in a manner that is not what is intended could result in an accident that would land Kovea in a lot of hot legal water. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas canister of a trusted brand will be fine.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be an excellent choice for those who are looking for a multifuel cooker that can cook with a variety fuels. It can be powered by gas, petrol/gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for every fuel type, and you can also adjust the flame size. The stove comes with an fuel pipe that sits flat on the floor and is connected to the tank in a snap.

While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it requires maintenance to ensure that it functions properly. It could be dangerous as it explodes when priming. This issue occurs with all liquid fuel stoves, which use a secondary spindle at the stove's end instead of a coil to vaporize the fuel.

It is also important to note that each fuel type requires the use of a different jet. This means that if you cook using kerosene, the jet hole has to be smaller than when cooking with gas. It's not a major issue however it's something to be aware of.

MSR Whisper Light

The MSR Whisper Lite is one of the tiniest, lightest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also easy to repair in the field. It can be used with canister or liquid fuel and comes with attachments for both. The new design is lighter by 10% compared to its predecessor, and the burner system was redesigned to improve the distribution of heat. It's great for beginners or backpackers with a budget.

The whistler Lite takes a little time to set up and prime, then boil water, but it's a reliable stove that won't fail you. The flame is extremely powerful and can cook a liter of water within two minutes. The only downside is that it's not as effective to simmer as other stoves.

This is the reason MSR has created the Dragonfly stove, which is an efficient simmering burner. It's designed in the same way like the whistler, but it is smaller and provides superior performance. It's not as cheap as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus stove and cookset is a fantastic alternative that gives you the same set-up for half the price. Whisperlite International and Universal can be used with isobutane. Both versions have the same basic design however the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.

Coleman Sportster II

Like many Coleman stoves, this is a simple, rough and ready unit that gets the job done. It's small, self-contained and solid with the tank on the bottom and the burner on the top. This makes it simple to use and an excellent choice for beginners, backpackers who want to reduce weight and for those who like to keep an extra or two in the van.

It is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha gas, also known as white gas) This stove can be used with non-leaded gasoline, as well. A gallon of gasoline will last for as long as a standard Coleman liquid fuel cylinder, so you'll save money on fuel with this option.

It requires some practice to achieve a perfect blue flame on a stove that burns liquid fuel. You'll need to pressurize the stove and prime them correctly before you can do this. If you do it wrong your fuel may be sprayed, pool, or splash over the burner, or even explode. To master this do some practice outside before your trip.

The stove may lose some performance and odor of the flame efficiency if you choose to use non-Coleman gasoline, but this is a trade-off for its versatility. Be sure to buy unleaded gasoline and not something that is enriched with methanol or ethanol (alcohol). These kinds of fuels can cause the performance of the vehicle to decrease and even explode.

ATG Jiko

The ATG Jiko multi-fuel stove made in South Africa (formerly known as the jiko) is an ultralight multifuel stove that's built for harsh environments like Africa. It is a compact, solid stove that can burn solid fuel tabs, gels and alcohol with only one nozzle. It is a minimalist, Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves ultralight design that is priced lower than other multifuel stoves. Fuel is also cheaper per liter than gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves feature a separate nozzle for each fuel type. It isn't easy to switch between fuels during bad weather conditions, or while wearing gloves. This can also add weight to the overall load. Multifuel stoves of the latest type use a single nozzle to burn multiple fuels, which makes it simpler. The newer models of these stoves are referred to as 'hybrid' or 'compressed fuel multifuel stoves' and there are many names for them like isobutane canister fuel white gas, kerosene and unleaded car gasoline/petrol.

A multifuel stove kit is available to convert your Trangia burners into multi fuel cookers. These are available at camping stores that specialize in outdoor equipment and can be bought internationally. These are great for Trangia enthusiasts. They can burn all liquid fuels apart from diesel and with the appropriate accessories, they can also simmer.
