Best Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds encapsulate your ears completely and allow for larger drivers to deliver deeper bass and wider soundstages. Many of them also feature active noise cancellation and Bluetooth technology.

1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless

Sony has redesigned an already great pair of headphones with the WH-1000XM4 Wireless. They are less heavy, more durable and feature a more balanced audio profile (though bass heavy). They also have an app for audio customization. Their active noise cancelling performs better than it did before, eliminating the background noise, and they have a longer battery life than many competitors.

These headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0, with support for SBC, AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. The latter can transmit high-resolution audio, however, you'll need compatible equipment and streaming service. The WH-1000XM4s also allows you to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and automatically switch between them as needed. This feature can be enabled through the Sony Headphones Connect app and it works flawlessly.

The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond more quickly to the touch of the panel, and this makes them easier to control during calls or to listen to media. Sony has added a feature to make voice calls clearer and more precise during calls. This is an obvious and pleasant addition.

The WH-1000XM4s aren't perfect, but they are among the top wireless headphones that we have ever test. They're comfortable, well-made, and have an energy-efficient battery that can last for more than 30 continuous hours. They can also be used in a passive manner using a TRS cable, which is ideal if you're traveling or need to conserve power.

The WH-1000XM4s are a better choice than the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfy, and their ANC is able to block out more ambient sounds. The B&Ws feature an EQ that is more flexible and an app that allows you to tweak the audio quality. The B&Ws are more robust and can be paired with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. 2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the most recent version of a headphone that became a standard for commuters as well as travelers from all over the world. Rather than reinventing the wheel, the new model retains the same formula that made the predecessor so popular, and adds the USB-C port, which is better at cancelling noise and longer battery life.

Like the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones have an elegant design and feel that exudes quality. The headband is made of plastic, yet it has a sturdy feel with hinges made of metal at the pivot points and the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you retract or extend the ear cups. The cups have soft cushions that are securely positioned over your ears and don't apply pressure to your head. They weigh 238 grams and are fairly compact when folded. You can wear them while wearing an overcoat or sweater since the noise cancelling function works even when you aren't on your head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s do not offer the best sound in this price range. The frequencies are fairly flat and lack the depth that higher-end headphones may be capable of bringing out. The upper registers are amplified which is acceptable for the majority of music but can be a problem for more delicate and complex genres. The bass is good but it lacks punch.

One feature that's not present is the ability to pause playback whenever you take off the headset. This is a feature Bose's rivals have offered for years. Another omission was the lack of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQ settings in the app however it would be nice to have manual control.

You can connect to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth 5.0 with multipoint support as well as more advanced codecs like aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust your headset's audio and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s come with four microphones inbuilt to pick up your voice while on the phone. They have excellent call quality, but they don't let you muffle the sound during playback like other wireless headphones. Update: A firmware update for the QC45s in February 2022 introduced manual EQ options to the audio app. This is a great upgrade.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand known for its high-performance headphones that provide long-lasting comfort and a style that lets listeners know they're listening to something special. Their first venture into wireless headphones that cancel out noise The Bathys are a stunning set of cans that look and sound great. They also come with an inbuilt high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for wired and wireless listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for up to 30 hours. We were able to get more than 40 hours of playback time on average from just one charge. If you have to charge your headphones in the future, the indicator light on the right earcup will change red.

They offer a good amount of features for headphones of this price point, including support for multiple devices simultaneously and automatic pairing (though you'll need to select the source device every time you need to listen). The headphones have built-in microphones that works with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones come with an easy-to navigate interface that makes it easy to control music and make calls.

For over-ear wireless headphones, the Bathys perform very well in our tests of noise cancellation, reducing the background sound by around 9 decibels on average. They aren't as good as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 and Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless but it's still very effective.

In our tests of headphone sound quality in our tests of headphone sound quality, the Bathys did well overall, with a the frequency response which generally corresponds to the SoundGuys preference curve, with just minor deviations in the mids and bass. They have a bass-rich sound pattern which adds plenty of boom to the mix, however, they can make vocals and instruments like cymbals seem a bit veiled.

Wear them wherever you want and not worry about whether others listen to your music. Their mic has passable recording quality via Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid to the treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new version of the company's top-of-the-line Bluetooth headphones. The last pair, the Momentum 3, was a solid but unspectacular entry in the class. The new model improves on the previous model with more sleek design, better gesture controls, and a huge battery life.

The improvements are subtle, but can make for a pair of over ear headphones that feel like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and don't fold. They come with a hardshell case that protects them while on the move. They also follow the style of a number of other recent bluetooth headphones wireless headphones headphones, such as those from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be incredibly device-agnostic. This means they can work with both Android phones and Apple iPhones, but do not come with the extra features (like Find My support and head-tracked spatial audio) that you'll find on the AirPods.

The biggest improvement is the battery that can play for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation on. This is more than twice the amount of the other brands and enough to take a multi-day journey without worrying about finding an outlet.

This could cause them to wake up at random times, which can be distracting while listening to music or making calls. Fortunately they stop working after 15 minutes of slumber by default and can be manually switched off using the power button.
