Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was a return to a classic sextet structure, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later and embarked on a world tour promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then and Now. It was the first album by the band not to feature any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
