Best Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds are able to completely encapsulate your ears. They also have larger drivers that deliver deeper bass and a bigger soundstage. Many of them also feature active noise cancellation and Bluetooth technology.

The latest Master & Dynamic MW65 update offers high-quality audio, numerous ANC modes, and a long battery life, all in a sleek and distinctive design.

1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless

Sony has improved on an already excellent pair of headphones with the WH-1000XM4 Wireless. They're less heavy, feel better constructed, and have more balanced sound profiles (though still bass-heavy), and include an app that lets you do some audio adjustments. They've improved their active noise cancellation, eliminating more ambient sounds and have a longer battery life.

These headphones are Bluetooth 5.0 and support SBC, buy bluetooth Headphones AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. The latter is able to transfer high-resolution music, though you'll need compatible devices and streaming services. The WH-1000XM4s is also able to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time and automatically switch between the two when needed. You can enable this feature via the Sony Headphones Connect app and it is extremely effective.

A subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensitivity of their touch panels. They respond quicker to tapping on the panel and are much easier to manage when making a phone call or listening to music. Sony has also added a feature that can make voice calls clearer and more precise during calls. This is an obvious and pleasant addition.

The WH-1000XM4s aren't perfect, but they are among the best wireless headphones that we have ever tested. They're comfortable, well made, and have an excellent battery that lasts for more than 30 hours continuously. They can be used passively using the TRS cable. This is ideal to travel with or for storing power.

The WH1000XM4s offer a better alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. They also have an application that lets you adjust their audio performance, and their EQ settings are more flexible than the B&W's. The B&Ws are built better and can be paired with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. They also support aptXHD and feature an AI-driven engine that attempts to up-scale compressed music to high resolution. This is known as DSEE Extreme and it does well in improving the clarity of music, particularly when listening to lossless music.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the most recent version of a headphone that became a staple for commuters and passengers around the world. Rather than reinventing the wheel the new model uses the same formula that made its predecessor so popular, adding USB-C, improved noise cancellation and a longer battery life.

Similar to the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones feature a premium look and feel that exudes quality. The headband is made from plastic, and has a sturdy feel with metal hinges at the pivot points and the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you open or retract the ear cups. The cups are cushioned, and have soft pads that are comfortable to wear over your ears without putting pressure on your head. When folded, they weigh 238 grams. They can be paired with a sweater or coat since they can be worn even when not on your head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones they do not provide the best sound at this price. The frequencies are dull and lack the details that blootooth headphones with higher prices might be able bring out. The upper registers tend to be boosted and is suitable for most music genres but could be a problem for delicate or intricate genres of music. The bass is decent, but is lacking punch.

The ability to pause playback when removing the headset is a feature that's not available. This is a standard feature in this price range and something that Bose's competitors have been offering for years. Another thing that was missing was the lack of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs in the app but it would be nice if there was an option to manually control.

The QC45s also come with four microphones built into the headset to hear your voice when you make calls. They have excellent call quality, however they don't let you silence the voice when playing back as other wireless headphones. Update: A firmware update for the QC45s in February 2022 added manual EQ options to the audio app. This is a great upgrade.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand that produces high-performance headphones. They are known for their comfort and style, which let listeners know that they're listening something special. The Bathys are their first wireless noise-cancelling headphones. They look and sound stunning. They also come with a built-in high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for wired and wireless listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for 30 hours. We got more than 40 hours of playback time on average from a single charge. If you are required to charge your headphones then the indicator light on the right earcup will turn red.

They offer a good amount of features for a pair of headphones of this price point with support for multiple devices at once and automatic pairing (though you'll need to manually select your source device every time you need to listen). They come with a built-in microphone that supports voice assistants like Siri or Alexa. The headphones also have an easy-to-use interface, making it easy to manage your music and make calls.

For wireless headphones that are over-ear The Bathys perform very well in our test of noise cancellation, reducing the sound of the surrounding environment by about 9 decibels on average. It's not as good as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 and Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless, but it is still effective.

In our tests of headphone sound quality, the Bathys were a good overall performer with an overall frequency response that matches the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with just slight differences in the bass and mids. They have a deep, bass-filled sound profile which adds plenty of boom to mixes, however, it can make instruments and vocals such as cymbals sound veiled.

Wear them wherever you want without worrying that others will listen to your music. The microphone has a decent recording quality via Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid - to the treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new version of the company's top-of-the-line Bluetooth headphones. The previous model, the Momentum 3, was a decent, but not the most impressive entry into the category. The latest pair improves on the previous model by having modern design, better gesture controls, and a huge battery life.

The improvements are subtle but can make for a pair of over ear headphones that feels like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and don't fold. They come with a hardshell case to protect them while traveling. The Momentum 4s are non-device-specific, similar to other Bluetooth headphones from recent times, like the ones from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They are compatible with Apple iPhones and Android phones, but they do not have the AirPods extra features, such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious improvement in this model is the huge battery that promises up to 60 hours of playback when the noise cancellation feature turned on. This is more than twice the amount of the competitors and sufficient to take a multi-day journey without having to search for an outlet.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 score and cited their sound quality and ANC as their main strengths. The only issue he has is: they lack a sense gravitas in the mids and treble. This means that orchestral tracks sound flat instead of grand. The bass is well-rounded, but it's easy to over-emphasize and cause fatigue in songs with strong bass lines, like the drums that are pounding in As I Lay Dying's Forever. The cymbals can sound smoky rather than full and there's no sense of depth in the lows.

The Momentum 4s are comfy and should not put too much pressure on your ears or neck. However they can be difficult to wear around the house or during longer listening sessions. They can move around on your head, causing intense head movements. This can cause them to wake up at random times, which can be distracting when listening to music or making calls. Fortunately they stop working after 15 minutes of rest by default and can be turned off manually off with the power button.
