Compact Pushchair Reviews

A compact and lightweight stroller can be a great choice for you if you frequently travel by car or public transport. These strollers are simpler to fold and store, and they're also less likely to get damaged by baggage handlers.

These strollers that are lightweight are convenient and easy to navigate over cobblestones. Plus, they can be easily stored in overhead compartments of planes.

Lightweight

The most compact pushchairs from birth are lightweight to carry and, more importantly, simple to fold. They're usually easy to fold in one hand and take up less space when folded than full size buggies. This makes them a good option if you have limited storage space in your home or are concerned about the space you have when traveling on planes, for example.

Some also have a very tiny footprint when closed, which allows you to walk through tight spaces. They are the best option if you live in an apartment or simply want something light and lightweight for day-to-day walking. They aren't ideal for older children who need to extend their legs to move around.

There are a myriad of types of folds that are available. Some can be completed with just one hand while others require two hands or more effort. Some are designed to fit in the baggage allowance for cabins on a variety of flights, or can be carried on your shoulder using a strap or handle.

For a lightweight pushchair, our favourite is the Silver Cross Dune. This offers all the smart design and thoughtful features that you would expect from this renowned brand however in a smaller package. It has an easy-to use fold, and like the Contours Itsy comes fully assembled in the box. It's a good choice for parents who intend to travel extensively with their child, and fits into the majority of car boot spaces and trunk spaces.

The Cybex Mios is another option. It bridges the two types of pushchairs and is a fully-functional system that is agile. It can be used from birth in a parent-facing mode, but then switched to world-facing as your child grows older, and it also comes with a comfortable recline that's suitable for napping. It isn't quite as compact as the Libelle however, it's a smaller package and is much easier to use on flat surfaces. It is not suitable for rough terrain. The price is affordable and the durability tests are excellent.

Easy to store

The Joie Pact Pro makes the perfect travel buggy. It folds so small it can fit into an overhead compartment for luggage and weighs so little that you won't even notice it in your boot. It's also a great day-to-day stroller and our tester Hollie found it easy to steer, even while carrying her toddler. She liked the adjustable handle and lockable wheels, however, she said it's not a particularly comfortable seat. It also has a feature where you can add additional features such as a reversible and washable seat cover, rain cover, and the foot muff.

The Babyzen YOYO is another impressively compact foldable pushchair. It's not as streamlined as the Cybex Libelle but it's still a neat package that can easily slide into trunks and car boot. It also has more options for newborns than other buggies for travel, including the option to add the bassinet or cot for newborns, plus a bespoke ride-on board for older kids and a tandem double-seat adapter.

The YOYO isn't the most compact pushchair for driving on uneven or rough terrain. Its small wheels also do not perform as well as other models that we have evaluated. It is still a very mobile pushchair, and the YOYO is a shrewd choice for in narrow aisles and muddy pathways. It's perfect for a city break or a holiday.

The Cosatto Bee6 offers a remarkably streamlined list of features for its affordable price. It folds down to the size of a backpack and weighs only 6kg, so it's an ideal travel buggy to carry on planes and trains. It's also easy to use and our MFM reviewer Matt found it a pleasure to steer even with a heavy toddler on board. The hood is a plus, as it can be adjusted to shade you and protect from sun and rain. It's ideal for napping. The only downside is that it doesn't have under-seat storage and you'll need to carry or delicately hang a bag on the handlebar (against our advice!). You can also purchase an additional changing bag holder to make this a great buggy for holidays.

Easy to maneuver

The wheels on small pushchairs might appear small, but they often do surprisingly well, and can navigate narrow shopping aisles or rough terrain effortlessly. The Micralite is a perfect example. Although it has small wheels, it can handle bumpy pavements easily, turn sharply on narrow roads, and handle light gravel with little problem. It also has a slick steering system and is a breeze to steer using just one hand. It folds into an attractive and compact box that is easily stored inside its carrying case.

Most compact pushchairs were designed for older babies or toddlers. However increasing numbers of them come with an option to lie flat or the option to add a carrycot (or car seat) to allow them to be used from the moment of birth. These innovative concertina or Z-fold buggies are typically light at 6-8 kg and can be cabin approved on many airlines, making them ideal for travel. MFM Editor Gemma says she has used it on numerous occasions and is able to use and to store.

If you are looking for a compact folding option, then the YOYO is an excellent option. It was the first buggy that offered this feature. It's still a preferred choice among parents, who prefer it over its competitors due to its unique design and superior performance. It's a great option for frequent travelers, especially when they want to stay clear of the frustration of waiting in line for baggage collection by bringing their stroller with them.

The YOYO also comes in a very compact size, fitting into the bag with ease and even plenty of room. This makes it an ideal choice for frequent travellers particularly those who have to carry a lot of stuff in their luggage. It's also extremely adaptable. You can purchase many accessories, including a bassinet for your baby, a custom riding board and twin travel bundles to transform it into tandem. You can also buy a rain cover and hood to give you added security.

Comfortable

Hollie, our reviewer, recommends the Silver Cross model to parents looking for a lightweight compact Collapsible Pushchair. It's user-friendly and can be tucked away into the trunk of your car. Its maneuverability and reclined seat are among the best we've seen in our tests. It also boasts a useful parent's tray and storage basket that can fit the size of a backpack, and it's got great sun cover options (including a Hood) and straps with padding that make your child be comfortable.

Some compact-fold strollers fold so small that they're cabin approved for air travel. This is a great advantage if you travel often or have limited space in your car boot. They're usually light so they're easy to carry. They can also be used as a travel system in the event that you choose a model with a lie-flat seat, or an infant pod.

A key thing to note when looking for a travel buggy is that not all models are created equal. Some brands claim that their compact-folding pushchairs can easily be folded with one hand. Others may require more effort or two hands to fold it. It's also worth determining if the buggy comes with a seat recline - some are fully flat, while others have only a slight recline that could be fine for toddlers but not for babies.

You'll also want to check whether your chosen model is designed specifically for the kind of travel you're planning on doing, such as if you're going somewhere hot, look out for one with an air-ventilated mesh fabric to help keep your little one cool. If you're heading somewhere that's wet or windy it is important to ensure that the pushchair is equipped with an appropriate cover. Covers that are generic won't fit and could let water in.
