Some receivers are better playing inside, whereas others struggle to do so on the outside. For instance, the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he ran a whopping 74% of his slot routes, compared to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a huge difference that shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Furthermore, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines inside on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more effective when lined up inside, since they are able to get targeted down the field, and often are in one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.

On the other hand we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore being the most effective tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo maximized McDuffie's skills by placing his slot to play nickel and dime packages and then moving him to the outside when playing base defense. Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are just as good. Wide receivers who have an excellent slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers rather than other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.

It's therefore interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. In actuality, he's running a higher number of routes in the slot than most of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent way to generate matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

He also plays the X-position and makes huge plays from outside. Lamb isn't as explosive as some of the other players in this list, but he is still a high-graded wide receiver who is well-suited to the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a player who can put huge numbers on targets of both kinds, is a different example. He is one of the best players in the game at taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a great catcher who is contested.

Another player on this list who's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has played in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-highest EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important member of his team's defensive unit. On the other hand, he's struggled to prevent passes from the outside and has given a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety who cannot compete with Hilton's speed, size and route-running abilities.
