Speedy wideouts are the biggest benefit of moving into the slot as they typically have a much easier time getting open in the field when their route isn't obstructed by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list is populated by possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than deep ones such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy will be the Rams' primary slot receiver this season is a sleeper selection. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a greater role in downfield targets. Hamler should be able to be a star on short-to-mid routes, as that's the way he performed in 2021 while playing for the Bills. He could be an excellent replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's abilities as some receivers excel in the slot, but can't play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, as an example leads the league in goals per game (4.8) However, he's only ranked 6th when it comes to the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets come from the outside and it's difficult to get a first down in a wide-open deep line in that setting.

Some receivers are better at playing inside, whereas others struggle on the outside. For example the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps during the season, and he completed 74% of his slot routes compared to just 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant difference and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Moreover there is the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). He also played 51% his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when lining up inside, since they are able to get targeted down the field and frequently find themselves with one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the other hand we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

This is why it's fascinating to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, since he plays slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. In fact, he's running a higher number of slot routes than most of the players listed on this chart. This is a great method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the top-rated receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes big plays from the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this ranking however, he's an extremely high-quality receiver and is an excellent match for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiving rating and is among the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also an excellent player for contested-catch.

Another player on this list that's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has played in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, which makes him a valuable player in the defense of his team. He's struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This has been a result of playing with subpar linebackers and safeties that aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
