What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are a great method to fix your gear until you reach the trailhead for a professional repair. The key is knowing what you can do with it if you need it.

Tools

Having the right tools at hand is essential when working on the job. This kit was designed with this in mind, and includes all the essential hand tools needed to repair items in the field. The tools are made from steel with a minimum of plastic to ensure they will stand up to use. The kit includes an afghan-like pouch with zippered for the coalcracker's tools, a twist awl, reamer, cutting shears and gimlets (5MM). Repair Patches

If your kit doesn't contain any of the above products, consider adding a bag with waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. Allow the sealant to set for up to 12 hours before using the repaired gear.

The essential field fabric kit for tents, packs and rainwear made from silicone-impregnated nylon. It includes one Clean Tape patch and a sil-nylon repair swatch along with a 1/4-ounce tube of Goretex Sil-Fix repair adhesive, sealant and brush. To apply the patch, place it over a smooth, clean surface of the damaged area, with at least 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper and rub the adhesive side down using a moderate amount of pressure.

Surface preparation is essential for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone or oils on shoes and boots could affect adhesion. For best results, use Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing to two hours.
