The iRobot Roomba 980 commercial robot vacuum Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums remove pet hair, lint and dust from the floor before they can settle. They can also avoid stairs and other obstacles, including tippy furniture.

Most robotic vacs require some maintenance, such as emptying (and occasionally rinsing) the bin, and wiping cameras and sensors. Also, they need to be plugged into an electrical source. Many come with smartphone applications for scheduling, adjusting setting and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980, the latest in a series of top-of-the-line robot vacuums, is a must for every modern home. This model is incredibly powerful suction and an HEPA filter that can help anyone concerned about allergies. In addition, it also comes with a powerful battery which can clean for up to two hours and it will return to its dock once its bin is full.

Smart mapping is another feature that assists in identifying areas of your home that require attention and creates an easy path to get around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of moving around toys that have been placed on the floor or furniture legs that stick out of the ground. It also has a camera sensor that will snap the Roomba back to reality when it starts to drift away from its original location.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers underneath the Roomba's bottom that don't have bristles and therefore tend to be more resistant to tangles than earlier models. They're also taller than previous rollers and are able to fit under beds and couches that are low, and they're designed to let this model move more easily on varying flooring kinds.

The Roomba 980 differs from other models with a high-end price tag due to its latest dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a great improvement over the previous version, that relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around the room and clean at least three times from different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a great job collecting pet hair, but struggled with thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best robot vacuum for carpet performing robots we've reviewed despite the minor drawbacks. It's also not as expensive as top-of the-line models. It's still packed with a variety of features that we'd expect to see in a top-of-the-line model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration that you'll find in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready for use immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you just plug it into a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it work. It will automatically return to its dock when its battery runs out or is full of debris. It also has indicator lights on the top for when its bin is full or it's time to recharge or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
