How to Program a New BMW Digital Key

The new BMW Digital Key is a technological breakthrough that turns your smartphone into a key. Using NFC, it can unlock and start your vehicle without the need for a physical key or fob.

Key Fob Replacement

You're probably aware that if you own a car, your key fob will be required to access the remote start or Comfort Access functions of your car. You may not know that the key fob on your BMW can be replaced in the event it becomes necessary. If you own a model that has a battery that can be replaced in the fob, it is easy to remove the backplate. The CR2032, a small battery (also known as a watch battery), can be easily replaced.

These batteries can be purchased at your local large-box retailer or replacement hardware store. You can also locate them on the internet. If you don't have a replacement, your owner's manual should provide instructions on how to open the fob to swap out the battery. You'll likely require an object that is thin, such as a flat-head screwdriver to open the fob apart at the edge. Be careful not to scratch any delicate plastic parts or the circuit board. After you've removed the old battery remove the fob cover and then place the new one in gently.

The next step is to program the new key fob to your vehicle. Place the key fob you want to program and those that you want to add into the car with the doors closed. Plug into the key and rotate the knob until it is in position 1. The dash and accessory light should now be lit. Press the BMW logo button and the unlock button on your new fob three times. Once you hear the door lock and unlock you can release the button.

If your key isn't functioning then you can purchase a new BMW key fob and have it programmable to your vehicle by an agent. The process can take up to two weeks and will cost you around $100 for the service. However, you can save money by purchasing a new key fob online from a vendor who specializes in car keys and then having it reprogrammed for your specific vehicle. If you do this, ensure that the new fob is prepared for the specific year and model of vehicle, and that it's a genuine BMW product. You should also get the car's VIN and ID from the government to prove ownership, as some online sellers require this to guard against fraud.

Keyless Entry System Replacement
