The iRobot Roomba 980 robot vacuum and mop combo Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums remove pet hair, lint, and dust from the floor before they can settle. They also can avoid obstacles like stairs and other obstructions, including tippy furniture.

Most robotic vacuums require maintenance, like emptying (and occasionally, rinsing) the bin and wiping cameras and sensors. Also, they have to be connected to an electrical source. Many come with smartphone applications for scheduling, adjusting setting and more.

iRobot Roomba 980

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the most recent in the series of top-of-the-line robot vacuum cleaners that are an essential part in any modern home. This model is incredibly powerful suction and an HEPA filter that can assist anyone suffering from allergies. It also has an extremely powerful battery that can clean for two hours, and return to its dock automatically once the bin is full.

It also comes with the feature of smart mapping that uses multiple sensors to suss out the areas in your home that require attention and create a cleaning path around them. This technology is very effective at navigating around toys left on the floor or furniture legs sticking out from underneath things. It also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba to reality if it begins to move away from its original location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers beneath the Roomba's bottom that do not have bristles, and thus tend to resist tangles more than earlier models. These are also a little higher than the older rollers and are able to fit under low couches and beds and are designed to allow this model to move more easily across a variety of floor types.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other models of this class however, is its incorporation of the latest dirt detection feature that utilizes cameras to detect tiny bits of dirt. This is a nice improvement over the previous model, which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around a room and clean it at minimum three times from various angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. Its score on the low pile carpet was very good and it got a very excellent score on mid pile too. It was successful in picking up pet hair but struggled with thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best mapping robot vacuum performing robots we've reviewed, despite these minor limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of-the-line models. It has a lot of features we would expect from a flagship model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps or home integration that you'll see in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready for use right away. After taking off the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, [Redirect-302] press its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will automatically return to its dock when it is running out of batteries or is full of trash. There are also indicators on top that indicate when its bin is empty, when it needs to recharge, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
