Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of damage and more AD or even more attachments.

Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a kind of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item upgrader mod they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at bonfires. They can also be salvaged by using an expert or higher salvage kit to retrieve upgrade components from other items.

The amount of damage that an armored item or weapon will absorb is contingent on the level of its upgrades. The upgrade of an armor piece to the highest upgrade level will boost the damage it absorbs. However, it's important keep in mind that this will increase its weight, causing it to weigh more than before.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades available in the game and they all have different effects. For instance, some upgrades will grant the armor a certain number of additional health points, while others make it stronger and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item will receive will be identified by the name of the upgrade as indicated in the table below.

A few upgrades also feature magic or a mix of technology and magic, which is indicated by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require charges to use, which are identified by an "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades refresh daily or never expire, according to the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest way to improve your armor. It can be found by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available in the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain weapons come with special upgrades that enhance their inherent qualities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, reduces the risk of the possibility of overheating), and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's acceleration for greater damage) are two examples.

The majority of weapon upgrades require a whetblade. It's one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by completing side quests or by killing a certain amount of monsters and bosses.

All tiers of jewels can be made at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels which require you to be at a sufficient level to be able to get them. Jewels can be substituted with another jewel without destroying the original. You can only replace the gem once in an item of equipment.

It is normal to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and create an outer layer that is more durable than metal so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not cause damage to them.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the appearance of your weapons and shields. These provide a small bonus and can be swapped out at any time, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis aren't swappable and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to provide your hero with many small, but beneficial benefits. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and through doing road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and then found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinkets a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which grants an unimportant but beneficial boost to movement speed and the ability to escape.
