BMW Smart Key

The majority of new cars on the market today come with keyless fobs that let drivers lock or unlock their car without having to insert the physical key. However they can be heavy and are a further thing that drivers may break or lose.

BMW has introduced a new high-tech twist to their current phone-as-key technology with the Display Key. Learn all about it in this blog post.

Keyless Entry

With BMW Digital Key, you can lock and unlock your car with just a tap on your smartphone. Download the app using Apple Wallet or Google Play Store, and then follow the directions on the screen. After you have linked your mobile phone compatible to your BMW Connected Account, you can share your account with up to five friends or family members who also use the app. When they accept your invitation, they can unlock and start your vehicle without having to carry a physical key. This feature is available even when your phone is in airplane mode with or without a data connection.

BMW Smart Key is more than a simple key replacement bmw to unlock your vehicle. It can be used to unlock the trunk and control the HVAC, check your fuel level and more. You can even prepare your car's interior so that it is cold or warm when you arrive. The only restriction is that your BMW should be equipped with Comfort Access from the factory or retrofitted by an authorized BMW dealer. You can verify if your car has Comfort Access with a free online BMW VIN decoder. The window sticker will show "S322A" in the event that you are equipped with this feature.

When you are ready to set up your brand new BMW Digital Key make sure your smartphone is charged and is in the same location as your vehicle. Place your iPhone in the tray for your smartphone and then choose "Start pairing" from the BMW Connected App on your vehicle. Once your phone and vehicle are connected, you can remove your iPhone from the tray.

If you're ready to add more users, BMW Car Key simply log into your BMW Connected account and select "Add New Digital Key'. Battery Replacement

If the batteries on your BMW fob run down you might ask, "Can I change the battery on a BMW key fob?". The answer is dependent on the model you own. For instance, the older diamond-shaped Bmw Car key key fobs were not designed to have the batteries replaced. They are sealed with glue and prying off the backplate could do some damage to the fob. However, more recent fobs can have their batteries replaced by simply opening the key fob and swapping out the CR2450 or CR2032 battery.

You can remove the metal valet keys of the most popular smart key models (1, 3, 5 7 and X) by pressing the small tab. Then you can open the access port using a screwdriver. The opening should reveal a small groove in the opening. The valet key can be removed using the tool to pull the tab out and push it out. Replace the old battery with a brand new one, and then put the cover back on.

You'll need an alternative method if you have a Display key with a touchscreen. The Display Key is water resistant but not waterproof like an ordinary fob. You will need to be cautious about exposing it too much water. While it can survive a trip in the washing machine, it's best to treat it as you would a smartphone -do not worry about rain but keep it out from water bodies.
