The two latter two are likely to see an increase in their targets this season if the Bucs move them into the slot more frequently however they'll need to increase their perimeter scoring to maintain that high standard.

The slot is a great option for wideouts that are quick, since they can open up more quickly when their route will not be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who benefits from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other receivers who are based on possession are at the lowest of the list. They're better on shorter and intermediate routes than deep zones. Jeudy is a solid choice for a sleeper this year as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved on more downfield targets. Hamler, meanwhile, should thrive on more short-to-middle and intermediate routes, because that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps a receiver takes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to play deep routes. It's not always a true reflection of a receiver's abilities, as certain receivers are better in the slot and can't play more deep.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance is the league leader in goals per game (4.8), but is only 6th in the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets come from outside and it's hard to get a first down when playing a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel inside and can't do much on the outer. For instance the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps during the season, and he completed a whopping 74 percent of his slot routes, compared to just 26% for boundary routes. This is an enormous difference and shows just how much more productive Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside most of the time on his passing downs. He has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51% of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when lined up inside, because they can get targeted way down the field, and often have one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. Both have been able to create pressures in the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the best tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by placing his slot to play nickel and dime packages, and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. As a whole, wide receivers with a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns at roughly the same rate as players who play on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a player like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in 2 of them. He's running more routes in the slot than most of the players on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes huge plays from the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this list however, he's an extremely high-quality receiver and is an excellent fit for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player who's capable of posting big numbers on both types of targets. He's among the best players in the league at throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb player who can play contested catch.

Another player on this list who's an authentic slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, which makes him a crucial part of his team's defense. He's had a difficult time stopping passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety players who aren't able to compete with Hilton's speed, size or ability to run routes.
