Romance

Avon Books is an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers that publishes romance novels. The brand is known for its pioneering historical romance, Avon books appeal to a wide range of readers. They are available as both paperbacks and e-books. Avon's romance books are a hit among adults and teens.

History

In the early days of Avon Publications, the company focused on paperback fiction. The American News Company founded Avon Publications in 1941 to compete with Pocket Books, who published dime novels. The ANC hired Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams Brothers and sisters to establish the new company. Meyers distinguished Avon from its competitors by focusing on the popularity of Avon's books rather than more sophisticated literary concepts. The first Avons looked similar to Pocket Books, however Meyers made it a point to emphasize their popularity.

Avon launched a line of digest-format paperbacks such as Modern Short Story Monthly or Avon Fantasy Reader. Avon also published a variety of works written by authors who are valued today by collectors. Avon changed its focus to romance in the 1970s, when a variety of romance novels reached and maintained positions on bestseller lists. The success of Kathleen Woodiwiss' The Flame and the Flower was the beginning of the modern romance publishing industry as a distinct genre.

The Avon Historical Society has an extensive collection of over 1000 items including the original Avon Books which have been digitized and are now available online.
