How to Replace an audi a1 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor Replacement Audi Key cost is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, replacement audi key Cost and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is failing and requires Replacement audi Key cost. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at an Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your Audi since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common component across the Audi 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
