WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases the item upgrader kit level by +3. A random substat is also added to every upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees more value in trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enhancements.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader every several weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item however they'll always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment. For example upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to upgrade weapons, tools, armor, and accessories. They are purchased by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be used on any weapon or tool with a button, which displays an image of the item level upgrade at the next upgrade level when the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the slot for the item and the current item upgrades level. For example weapons are more expensive than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item level upgrade is upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Upgraders for items can be found at many locations on the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be increased by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

In contrast to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no upgrader for items in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade are acquired via various methods, which is both an improvement and a drawback.

Crests

Utilizing these new currencies isn't too difficult however, the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece of equipment attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This change is designed to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests have one purpose, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance it's best to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the best equipment you have and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to create. This is particularly relevant for rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, which can only be eligible to benefit from the account-wide discount if all of the slots are full of high-quality equipment.
