How to Replace an audi a3 key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best method key for audi doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and audi a1 Key replacement ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find especially in the case of a Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many problems in your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points.
