Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a world tour to support the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album by the band that did not include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and singer Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis condition which hampered his singing.
