3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeled buggy is perfect for off-road terrain and offers a smooth ride for baby. They are also easier to maneuver and push than a four-wheel buggy especially if they have fabric sling seats or seats that are set snugly in the frame, delivering the best ergonomics and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are extremely stable, which makes them an ideal option for off-roading (especially when equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). These buggys often have oversized front tires that can withstand bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some models even feature a lockable front tire for extra stability on uneven terrain.

It's important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies can have a lower center of gravity than 4-wheeled models which means that they topple over more easily. The best 3-wheeled pushchairs are designed with perfect geometry to ensure that they remain solid in all conditions. They should be able of turning on a dime, be easy to steer using just one hand, and feature the front wheel rotate 360o that makes them great for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.

Look for models with pneumatic tyres. These are designed to handle nonpaved tracks, and should be able to handle mud, gravel, rocks, etc. A majority of all-terrain buggies come with a swivelling front wheel that can be locked to increase stability when working on extremely rough terrain.

A tri-wheeled pram is a great choice for runners and those who like to walk fast uphill. This is particularly true if you are planning to connect a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent model. It has an incline-reclining seat that is flat, with a 5-point harness, and plenty of storage space to keep everything you need (plus the ability to extend 50+ of the sun hood). It's light, compact and suitable for babies and can be used with car seats or a carrycot. It can also be used for jogging with a light pace, but is not intended for serious runners.

Weight

If you're looking for a buggy that can tackle terrain that is difficult, you should select one with large tires. These will cope well over cobbles, grass and dirt tracks, and provide an enjoyable ride for any passenger. They are also great for jogging since they're equipped with suspension and are easy to get up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they can be quite heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the best 3 wheel buggy to use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheeler has 16 rear wheels, and a lockable swivel front wheel, so it's very manoeuvrable. It comes with tyres filled with air that require pumping up from time to time. It can accommodate children until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the seat shape and she found steering it easy even with her 3 wheel stroller for newborn year old on board.

Another great option is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, that comes with an adjustable handlebar and a hood made of high-quality with 50+ UV protection. It's also easy to get up and down kerbs, and it can fit into small car boot. It can be used as a stroller with an infant carrycot or toddlers.

Fabric sling seats are tucked within the buggie's frame, as opposed to over it like modular seats. This style has a lower centre of gravity at the perfect height. It is simpler to push, and lighter to kerb-pop (you don't know how many times you'll need to do that as a brand new parent!).

Seating

The capacity for seating of 3 wheelers is impressive and there are many different choices to choose from. For a newborn, there is the option to use the carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cozy and comfortable lie flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy) In addition, older babies and toddlers can use the parent or world-facing seat that is spacious and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. The seats do not recline completely, but can be lowered down to the lowest position. This should allow your child to have plenty of room and headroom.

A sling seat made of cloth is also available. It offers the advantage of being set snugly inside the frame instead of sitting on top as a modular seat and this gives a lower centre of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this type of seat dealt with challenges.

In addition to a big shopping basket, this type of buggy usually has quite useful features, such as an extendable 50+ UV hood, an easy to use brake pedal, and some games-changing visibility lights that appear from the handlebar and can be placed directly in front of the occupants to improve their safety when they are tackling difficult terrain.

Storage

The 3-wheeled frame makes the buggy much more sturdy to push one-handed and is also ideal for handling difficult terrain. The shopping basket is smaller than a four-wheeler.

A good quality ATP will have a top suspension, pneumatic tyres and a padded handle for your convenience. It should also be equipped with a carrycot and car seat which means you can use it from the moment you are born.

MFM's reviewers found that the 3-wheeler frames couldn't fit through their home doors or car boot. If you're worried about space, be sure to check out the dimensions of the buggy when it is folded before buying.

It's worth considering a strollers 3 wheels-wheeler that can take 2 (or even 3!) This is the best choice for your future and can save you money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most well-known. It can be used from the day of birth as a single buggy, and then converted into twin buggies when your baby begins walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more comfortable. These are found on pushchairs like the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath said offered "an amazing ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tires of the Phil & Ted's Sport made it easier for her to maneuver around kerbs and other obstacles.

These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain their inflation and will need to be filled regularly. These tyres are prone to punctures, so it is recommended to always carry a repair kit as well as an spare inner tube when you're out and out and about.

PU tyres are typically used on pushchairs since they are a cheaper option than air-filled tyres but are just as robust. You can recognise PU tires by their smooth appearance and soft texture. They also slide over flat and tidy surfaces.

It's usually possible to identify the difference between air-filled and PU tires by running your hands over each one. If it feels firm, then it's a rubber tyre, and If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also determine whether your buggy is equipped with PU tyres sliding them across an even, smooth surface. They should roll smoothly and fit comfortably into wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are able to withstand the rough terrain that comes with high-performance buggies.
