The iRobot Roomba 980, the most recent of a series of top-of the-line robot vacuums, is a staple for every modern home. It also comes with a feature called smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to help it suss out the areas in your home that require attention and create a cleaning path around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of maneuvering around toys that are placed on the floor or furniture legs that stick out from under the furniture. Roomba also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba back to reality when it begins to move away from its original location.

iRobot has also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that do not have bristles and therefore are more likely to avoid knots than earlier models. They are also taller and can fit under beds or couches with low sides. They're designed to make this model more maneuverable on different kinds of floors.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other models of this class Its main feature is the inclusion of a new dirt detection feature that utilizes cameras to detect particles of dirt embedded. This is a significant improvement over the previous model, which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around the room and clean it at minimum three times from various angles.

In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a decent job of removing pet hair, but it was struggling with very thick and long pet fur that was stuck together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our best robot vacuum mop combo-performing robots, and isn't even nearly as expensive as some of the other top models on this list. It has many of the features we would expect from a flagship model but does not have all the fancy apps and smart home integrations you'll get from other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and start working immediately.
