Defra Exempt Multi Fuel Stoves

Defra Approved

You may have noticed across our site that a number of our wood burning stoves are listed as DEFRA exempt or DEFRA approved. To the average home owner, these terms could sound like jargon that homeowners don't have to be aware of however this could not be further from the truth.

DEFRA is the acronym for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and they handle regulations and policies concerning the environment, farming and food. Defra approved stoves have passed a rigorous test to ensure they adhere to the strict guidelines of the government for smoke emission levels during operation. They're additionally designed to burn authorized fuels like coal and DEFRA Recognized Stoves wood more efficiently, which means they produce far fewer pollutants.

It's a great thing for those who reside in a Smoke Control Area, as the law currently prohibits smoke emissions within these areas, unless you use a DEFRA-approved stove and an approved fuel. In the past, it has been possible to install a non-Defra-approved stove in a Smoke Control Area as long as you only used approved fuels like wood. From January 2022, the laws will be changed and stoves that are not approved won't be allowed to be used unless they're equipped with a secondary or third-party system that will reduce their production of particulate nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and organic gaseous substances.

The stoves have an adjustable air feed that allows you to open the top vent a small amount and still have a safe, efficient combustion.

Another benefit of purchasing a Defra approved stove is that it is able to be fitted with a 5 inch chimney liner. This is important as the majority of building codes require a chimney to have a minimum 5-inch diameter.

Smoke Control Areas

If you reside in a smoke-free zone, you will need a Defra approved stove if you want to legally burn wood in your home. These stoves have been inspected by DEFRA to ensure that they meet the strict smoke emissions standards that are required in areas of smoke control. A Defra approved stove, also known as a DEFRA multi wood burning stove or fuel, will have passed a stringent test designed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The tests Defra approved stoves must pass are designed to ensure that the appliance emits only minimal amounts of grit and smoke when it's operating.
