Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Slots are the same for every spin. There aren't any hacks that will help you beat them. There are a few tricks that you can apply to increase your chances of winning.

Slot Efficiency

Slot efficiency is the goal of maximising the amount of slot switches that can be constructed while avoiding the violation of a set of predefined constraints. These constraints may include, for instance, the minimum allowed operational delay (usually expressed as scheduling delays), fairness, equity, access, competition, environmental goals and many more. The slot allocation process is a complicated one and optimizing it to achieve the desired performance metrics requires careful analysis of all the factors at play.

Speedy wideouts are the main beneficiaries of moving into the slot, because they generally are more likely to be open in the field in the event that their route isn't blocked by a cornerback or linebacker. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list includes more possession-based receivers who perform better on short and intermediate routes than in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a great choice for a sleeper this year as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler, meanwhile, should excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, as that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The percentage of snaps that receivers take in the Slot Machine bonuses could be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's skill set because some receivers excel in the slot, but can't play deep and vice versa.

Furthermore there is the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines up inside on most of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a pro in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more efficient when they are lined up inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field, and are often faced with one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the passing game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the highest tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by putting his slot to play nickel and dime packages and then moving him to the outside for base defense. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been a huge advantage when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's worth noting that their slot counterparts are also excellent. As a group, wide receivers with high slot receiving grades score touchdowns at roughly the same amount as those who are on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets and flanker in two of them. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players on this list. This is a great way to create matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.

He also plays at the X-position and makes big plays outside. Lamb isn't as explosive as some of the other players in this list, however he's still an elite wide receiver who is well-suited to the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both types of targets. He's among the best in the game at taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a great catcher who is contested.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps so far this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-highest EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important part of his team's defensive team. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is the result of playing alongside unsafe linebackers who can't match up with Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
