After several frustrating days of trying different combinations of RS485 hats, different wiring connections, with and without termination resistors and ordering a USB RS485 adapter which would also fail to connect, we tried to install the Data logging WiFi adapter. Wire up the RS485 stacks and set the termination switch on the first and last RS485 Extension in the bus to "on", as shown below. Star and ring topologies are not recommended because of signal reflections or excessively low or high termination impedance. Grounds between buildings may vary by a small voltage, but with very low impedance and hence the possibility of catastrophic currents - enough to melt signal cables, PCB traces, and transceiver devices. The serial RS232 to RS485 converter and RS232 to RS422 converter units, also called serial converters, are small electronic devices used to convert a serial RS232 signal, (for example the COM port in older computers) into either RS485 or RS422 signals.

A RS485 bus consists of one master and multiple slaves. The connection between the board and the PC is done through the ultra mini serial to DB9 cable and I can successfully read/write data from and to the board.

PCs are normally not equipped with an RJ11 socket for serial RS232 communications. Extending a RS232 line is done by converting the RS232 signal into RS422 and then back to RS232 at the remote end. A symmetrical pin-layout allows two DTEs, data terminal equipment, to be connected directly without use of a modem or other DCE, data communication equipment. The RS422 converter is used for data transmission, using balanced or differential signaling, it is mainly used in industrial and commercial environments since lots of process equipment and machinery have this protocol built-in. You have to power up the slaves before the master, since the RS485 master searches for slaves only at startup. Each RS485 slave is identified with its own ID. Another thing I've done is connecting the slave device to to the SENA RS485 adapter, and use the metal piece on the pins, the middle pin of the adapter, when touching the metal, rs485 cable makes the TX led turn on. Configure the extension as slave or master (as described here). Where should I go from here? Because a mark (logic 1) condition is traditionally represented (e.g. in RS-232) with a negative voltage and space (logic 0) represented with a positive one, A may be considered the non-inverting signal and B as inverting. These are used in programmable logic controllers and on factory floors. The Jazz PLC series from Unitronics are not standard equipped with a RJ11 connector for serial communications.
