Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also sharper, more complex and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour to promote it. In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before.
